Twitter's new search feature helps you lookup tweets by dates

Twitter's new search feature helps you lookup tweets by dates
Twitter's Advanced search feature has now added a date range field that lets you search for a specific tweet within a time frame with ease.
To use the feature, you need to go to Twitter's advance search page and scroll down to the 'Dates' section. All you need to do is mention the time period and then search for tweets within the specified period. This new feature makes the micro blogging site even more user friendly.
Twitter which has seen a decline in users base which grew just by 3.8 percent in the last quarter compared to a 10 percent growth in the beginning of 2013. The company had revealed its financial results of fourth quarter which said that it has 241 million monthly active usersnow of which 184 million were monthly active mobile users. According to reports, Twitter’s Head of News Vivian Schille, has hinted that the micro blogging site may remove hash tags and @ replies to make the site even more ‘streamlined’. The thinking behind the change is that new users may find Twitter easier to understand with the removal of the @ replies and hash tags.
Twitter is also reportedly testing a new feature dubbed as 'Fave People' that will allow users to go through a timeline of favorite people. The feature has been rolled out in Twitter's alpha Android app. The app which is currently in testing phase features a swipe-able top menu, along with Home, Discover and activity sections.

5 Registry hacks for windows 8/8.1

Windows 8 and 8.1 have been controversial releases of windows for desktop users since they changed the way windows used to work. Here are a few hacks which tweak your PC to make it more endurable.
5 Registry hacks for windows 8/8.1
Warning:
1. Registry modifications can be tricky, so be aware that what you are going to do can make your system crash in some worst case scenarios.
2. Do remember the golden rule while playing with windows registry: keep a backup of the folder you are playing with.
In order to become a windows registry editing wizard, you need to know the basics of it. You should be able to execute the following commands without any second thoughts. After you are familiar with these instructions, we will continue to our hacks.
  1. To open the registry editor, you need to hit Windows Key + R combination and type “regedit” in the Run dialog box that shows up.
  2. To create a new key inside a folder, click on the right hand side pane when the folder is selected and select the key type (DWORD, LWORD etc.) and choose value as specified.
  3. To create a new folder, right click on the left side pane and select new key.
  4. If you wish to revert back to the original setting, just delete the key created, or set the value to 0 if you made it 1 and vice versa.
Now that you’re familiar with the basics, let’s get started with the hacks.
1. How to get back the “Confirm Delete” dialog box in Windows 8/8.1
One thing that goes unnoticed in Windows 8 is that the 'confirm delete' dialog box does not pop up when you simply delete a file. The file directly goes to the recycle bin when you hit delete. Though, this is a welcome change as people are generally getting more used to permanently deleting files using Shift + Delete but sometimes you need the confirm box in case you are not sure. If you really want it back, here’s a registry hack for the same:
Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPolicies in regedit. Create a new DWORD value here with a name ConfirmFileDelete and set its value to 1.
2. How to prevent Users from uninstalling metro applications in windows 8/8.1
Sometimes when you give your device to some other person and later find out that they uninstalled an application by mistake or intentionally, you really want more power over your device. In order to avoid the trouble, you can use this registry hack to remove the uninstall option from the app bar itself.
Navigate to “HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindows” and if the Explorer folder doesn’t exist, create one under the Windows folder. Create a DWORD key in this Explorer folder namedNoUninstallFromStart with value 1.
You need to log off and log in again for the changes to take place. Then you should see that when a metro application is right clicked, the uninstall option is not present.
3. How to disable the application switcher in windows 8/8.1
When you use the file menu, or anything that involves the top left corner of your screen, the app switcher shows up which displays apps that you can switch to. This can be irritating at times. Only one registry setting stands between you and your relief. Here’s a registry hack to disable this feature in case you don't need or use it.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionImmersiveShellEdgeUI and add a DWORD value (32 bit) with name DisableTLcorner and value 1 (you probably would have guessed the value without reading).
Note:
  1. You can still access the metro apps with the Alt+Tab keyboard shortcut if you wish to switch.
  2. If the EdgeUI folder doesn’t exist, create one in Immersive Shell.
If you don’t want the charms bar too, here’s the link to do so: Disable Charms bar hint.
And if you wish to do some more tweaking to the Start screen, you can visit these articles:
Adjust Desktop Icon Spacing in Windows 8
Changing maximum rows of tiles on start screen in Windows 8
Even after applying these tweaks, Windows 8 might still not become the Windows 7 successor you wanted it to be, but we hope it would be a bit closer to it.
4. How to disable the lock screen in windows 8/8.1
The lock screen was a welcome addition to the operating system but some people found it an extra hurdle to accessing the system. Here’s how you can disable it using a simple registry hack, if you don’t want the screen:
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsPersonalization and create a DWORD named NoLockScreen with value 1.
5. How to make File Explorer open My Computer directly in Windows
Remember the good old days when clicking on the file explorer icon took you to the My Computer screen and not to Libraries? I personally find it infuriating when my machine opens the Libraries folder instead when I click the file explorer icon on my Taskbar.
Right click the explorer icon on your task bar and right click on the “File Explorer” that shows up in the context menu. Click on properties and in the target you need to put in this value:
%windir%explorer.exe ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
Click Ok and you’re good to go.
Note: If you wish to default to some other frequently accessed location, you can put its directory path in the value above.

ISPs express inability to ensure under-13s don't access social networking sites

ISPs express inability to ensure under-13s don't access social networking sites
The Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have informed the Indian government that they have no mechanism to ensure children under the age of 13 don't have access to social networking websites such as Facebook and Orkut.
It's notable the Indian government on a directive of the Delhi High Court had asked the service providers to ensure preteens don't access social networking websites. The government had told the court that they could not direct the social networking sites as they were not governed by the Indian laws.
“It is for the social networking companies to implement the court order. How can ISPs, which are only providing connectivity, know who is opening an account on Facebook and other platforms,” a representative of the Internet Service Providers industry. The Internet Service Providers Association of India is quoted as saying in a letter to the Department of Information and Technology.
The social networking websites have been asked in India to ensure children below 13 years don't have account on social networking websites. The Delhi HC has already rapped the Indian government for not having adequate laws to prevent children from abused through the social networking sites. WhatsApp processes a record 64 billion messages a day

WhatsApp processes a record 64 billion messages a day
WhatsApp continues to be the most popular messaging service as it has created a new record of processing 64 billion messages in a day. The figure includes 20 billion messages sent and 44 billion messages received.
Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion in February and post the acquisition the messaging app has passed 465 million monthly active users mark. The company came under scrutiny regarding privacy issues, leading WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum to make a statement that its user privacy will not be affected even after the Facebook acquisition. WhatsApp added that it would be adding free voice calls this quarter and aims to hit 1 billion active users by year end.
Other messaging apps are also gaining immense popularity in the meantime. Japanese messaging app Line has also announced that it has recently reached 400 million registered users milestone. The company had announced reaching the 300 million user mark in November last year. Line says that the number of new users who are signing up daily, has reached “around 1.7 million per day, indicating rapid growth worldwide.”
Most users of LINE are from Japan with almost 50 million registered users in the country, followed by Thailand and Indonesia where the app has 24 million and 20 million users respectively. India has another 18 million LINE users. Interestingly US has also crossed 10 million LINE users as well. The company also announced that it processed a record 10 billion messages in a day on 21 March. LINE's CEO Akira Morikawa says that the company aims to reach over 500 million users by year end.
However the LINE messaging app numbers have to be taken with a pinch of salt, as it double counts users who have one account but use LINE on multiple devices. The messaging app doesn’t provide active user numbers, so its difficult to compare it with other messaging apps like Whatsapp or WeChat which have 465 and 355 million monthly active users respectively.

Google's Project Ara brings Blocks modular smartwatch

Google's Project Ara brings Blocks modular smartwatch
Google is said to be working on a Project Ara modular smartwatch which will come in blocks just like the Project Ara smartphone. It is also feature open software that will allow developers to create new apps or build their own Blocks. The smartwatch is expected to be launched in 2015 and will provide users with an endless choice of functions on their personal smartwatch.
The individual blocks for the smartwatch will tell the time, give directions, receive calls, and could include a multitude of customizable features like which sensors you want to add, whether you want a basic fitness band or a fully featured smartwatch. Users will have to buy new unique Blocks once the original ones wear out or are updated. The modular smartwatch will support both design personalization and function flexibility — to allow for wearables that can suit various tastes, wrist sizes and personality.
“We currently have a functional prototype that proves the concept. More specifically — that the connections are reliable enough to send data from block to block, and that the communication protocol can support the data rate at which the information is being transferred around the device,” says Blocks’ Serge Vasylechko.
“The current aim is to look at design issues around Blocks and make it comfortable and appealing to wear for the user. Once that is done we can move on to full prep towards a crowd funding campaign which we plan to release in the near future. In the longer run, we aim to release the full product itself by mid 2015, with developer editions ready before that.”

Wearable tech is on the rise, recently Google Inc had announced Project Android Wear and partnered with LG, Motorola among others to launch new smartwatches. Motorola and LG have been in the news for showing teasers of their upcoming smartwatch concepts and are expected to launch them this year.

iOS apps to get more expensive in India

iOS apps to get more expensive in India
Apple has sent out an email to developers stating that it will use the current Dollar-Rupee exchange rate to revise the price of apps being sold on the App Store. This will result in the prices of apps going up for Indian consumers. So far, Apple has been calculating the app prices based on an older conversion rate i.e. $1 = Rs. 55. After the new exchange rate becomes applicable, you will notice popular apps like Angry Birds and Camera +, that cost $0.99 (Rs. 55), start selling for about Rs. 60. This change is supposed to start becoming visible in the next 24 hours.

Apart from India, the app prices are also supposed to go up for consumers in countries like Australia, Indonesia, Turkey and South Africa. However, the reworked exchange rates mean that consumers from New Zealand and Israel will actually see the app prices drop in their respective App Stores.

This price change was widely expected since Apple hadn’t changed the exchange rates in the App Store for a long time. Now that the new financial year has rolled in from April 1, it seems like an opportune time for Apple to introduce the new conversion rates.

Toshiba introduces fast wireless power receiver IC

Toshiba introduces fast wireless power receiver IC
Toshiba has made the “TC7763WBG” which is a wireless power receiver IC (Integrated Circuit) for mobile phones, mobile accessories and wireless game controllers. The wireless power receiver IC has a charging time that is the same as charging with a cable.
This Toshiba chip adheres to the Qi wireless charging standard, which makes it compatible with many other devices and chargers which use the same technology. The circuit is able to achieve a maximum output power of 5 watts, which make it at par with wired charging solutions. The wireless charger is free of any exposed charging ports, that is an advantage with demand increasing for waterproof portable products, such as wireless video game controllers and smartphones.
Deepak Mithani, senior director of the Mixed Signal Business Unit, System LSI Group at TAEC stated at the launch, "We are seeing a strong interest in wireless power technology for products like smartphones, game controllers, and other portable devices. Besides the advantage of charging a device without the use of a cable, one interesting and emerging application is for mobile waterproof gadgets where a device is fully enclosed in its housing with no exposed connectors. Customers are demanding a quick way to charge their portable electronics and this chipset provides a convenient and effective way to satisfy their demand."
Toshiba had first unveiled the device at the CES 2014, along with prototype of its laptop-tablet-desktop-canvas hybrid. The tablet has a hinge back design along with a detachable keyboard. The hybrid device offers different modes including a desktop mode, laptop mode, canvas mode and a tablet mode. Toshiba is expected to release the hybrid tablet sometime this year.

Nokia's appeal over asset transfer to Microsoft rejected by Supreme Court

Nokia's appeal over asset transfer to Microsoft rejected by Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of India has ordered Nokia to pay a 35 billion rupee ($572m) guarantee before transferring its Chennai manufacturing plant to Microsoft. The order relates to Nokia's long-term dispute with Indian tax authorities over $340 million in unpaid taxes.
The ruling comes less than two weeks after Nokia escalated its tax dispute, after setting aside ₹22.5 billion ($367 million) in an escrow account in order to secure the manufacturing plant from the government. But the Indian IT department believes the amount the amount isn't enough to meet its tax claims, which are between $650 million and $3.4 billion.
With the Supreme Court upholding the IT department's demands, Nokia may have to put up the extra cash as a guarantee or may shut down its handset manufacturing plant altogether. Nokia's Chennai manufacturing plant is one of Nokia's largest globally, with over 8,000 employees and constituting nearly 25 percent of the workforce that will be transferred to Microsoft.
Microsoft had announced that it will acquire Nokia's Devices and surfaces business in a $7.2 billion deal in the first quarter of 2014. But after the court ruling Nokia has announced the sale would occur in April instead.
"Nokia and Microsoft have already received most of the required regulatory approvals, including approvals from the European Commission and the US Department of Justice. Furthermore, Nokia and Microsoft continue to make good progress related to the closing conditions and integration planning. However, the transaction is pending approvals from certain antitrust authorities in Asia which are still conducting their reviews," Nokia said in a statement.
