TRAI to set 'minimum download speed' for mobile Internet

TRAI to set 'minimum download speed' for mobile Internet
Thanks to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), you may no longer have to grapple with the slower Internet speed on your mobile phone. The telecom regulator has just released a consultation paper to examine the minimum download speeds for mobile phones.
In a release, the regulator says the consultation paper on amendment to “The Standards of Quality of Service for Wireless Data Services Regulations, 2012” aims to examine the benchmark for “minimum download speed” being offered through various technologies, so that the minimum download speeds are transparently made available to the consumers.
"The Authority (TRAI) has been receiving a number of complaints from consumers regarding the poor download speed experienced by them. The Authority after examining the issue felt that there is now a need to mandate the 'minimum download speed' for the wireless data services," TRAI added in the release.
The authority seeks to prescribe a minimum download speed for wireless data services, which will be based on the data on minimum download speed reported by service providers in the last three qarters. The regulator has proposed along with each tariff plan for data services, mentioning minimum download speed should be mandatory on all vouchers, websites and advertisments etc.
Currently, there's no binding regulation on telcos to deliver a minimum speed for wireless services. If implemented, the move will help users, especially heavy data consumers,
make a better decision on selecting operator.

5 Apps to fix the Nexus 5

5 Apps to fix the Nexus 5
The Nexus 5 is one of the best smartphones available in the market today. It looks great, has a fantastic, high resolution display, top notch hardware, latest version of Android with a promise of quick updates as soon as Google announces them and a solid overall performance; all at a relatively wallet-friendly price. It’s an extremely sensible product that you just can’t go wrong with it.
But as is the case with every gadget, it’s not perfect. There are some gripes that we have on both the hardware and software side. While there is little that we can do to change the hardware, thankfully, we can improve the software experience with the help of a few simple applications. So let us take a look at five apps that will help you fix your Nexus 5.
1. Camera AwesomeThe Nexus 5 camera has received a lot of flak since its launch. Contrary to popular belief, though, the actual camera hardware is not that bad and you can get some pretty amazing results with it. Unfortunately, what lets the camera down in most cases is the camera application that Google bundles with the phone – it just isn’t as good as you would expect.
This is where Camera Awesome comes in. Camera Awesome comes with a ton of settings and features that let you adjust and play around with a whole bunch of things before you take your shot. The range of customization options available here is far superior to what you get on the stock camera app, allowing you to have a much better control over the final image. And unlike some of the other third party camera applications out there, Camera Awesome has a good UI design as well, which makes accessing all those features even more easier.
An alternative to this app is VSCO Cam. While it actually has even fewer features than even the stock camera app, it makes up by having a ton of image editing features, including some gorgeous, professionally tuned filters for your photos that will lend a touch of class that you can’t get with other apps.
Download Camera Awesome from here.
2. Light FlowWhile the Nexus 5 does come with a multicolor LED for notifications, by default the OS makes rather poor use of it. It is awfully slow while blinking in some apps and it won’t even bother glowing to show the battery status while charging or discharging.
Light Flow allows you to customize the behavior of the LED on your phone. You can choose when and how the light blinks for various events and applications. You even get more control over the color of light that should glow for a particular event or app, so that you know exactly what your phone is indicating you about at just a glance.
Light Flow is a premium app but there is a free version that you can try out.
3. Dice PlayerGoogle has traditionally left stock Android bereft of a proper video player. While most other OEMs have one, including support for a wide range of codecs and containers, on Nexus devices you are relegated to playing only MP4 videos in the default Gallery app.
Dice Player takes care of that problem completely. It’s a fully functional video player, with features like hardware acceleration and subtitle support. It also supports a wide range of video formats so you can practically throw anything at it and it will work. The interface is also better designed than some of the other players out there, such as MX Player, it’s more reliable and has less intrusive ads despite being a free software. It’s really a must-have if you plan to watch a lot of videos on your phone.
Download Dice Player from here.
4. ES File ExplorerThe support for a full-fledged file explorer, such as the ones you get on a desktop operating system, is one of the best features of Android. This is why it’s so baffling when you find out that Google does not actually include one in stock Android, making it only slightly more functional out of the box than iOS or Windows Phone.
Thankfully, there is absolutely no shortage of file managers on the PlayStore for you to try. One that particularly stands out is ES Explorer with its laundry list of features. Other than basic file-management tasks you can also open and compress ZIP and RAR files, manage other apps on your phone, remotely access the files on your phone, edit text files, access FTP servers, use it as a client for Dropbox, Box.net, etc. and much, much more. It is more than you’ll ever need and despite that the app is still free.
Only area where ES Explorer leaves a bit to be desired is in the UI department. If you’re someone who prefers form over function and don’t mind sacrificing some of the features for a better UI design, then you can consider downloading inKa File Manager.
Download ES File Explorer from here.
5. HelloWith the introduction of Android 4.4, Google merged the SMS functionality with the Hangouts application, which was previously just an IM and video call service. Unfortunately, this was a very bad idea. While the app is designed to merge SMS and IM from the same contacts under one name, we all know no one really uses SMS anymore for messaging their family or friends. The only people who still send SMS are the kind who want your money for services you don’t need.
This means that all your junk SMS, or basically all your SMS get dumped together in the same application as your Hangouts chats, which just makes the experience of using Hangouts worse. Thankfully, Google has not made it compulsory to use Hangouts as your SMS app and you can actually download third-party SMS apps to use instead. This also means that all your SMS messages go into a separate app leaving your Hangouts alone.
Now you could use pretty much any app for this purpose but we chose to highlight Hello, here. It is one of the best looking SMS apps out there, with simple and attractive UI. It’s also a perfectly good substitute for the old messaging app on Android and actually way better looking. And it has some great features too, such as a message preview that appears on top of your screen and quickly dismisses itself, and the ability to reply, mark as read or delete an SMS from the notifications screen, as soon as it arrives. All for a sum of $0.00.

Remembering Nokia: 10 of its most iconic phones ever

Remembering Nokia: 10 of its most iconic phones ever
Come this April 25, Nokia as a phone manufacturer might no longer remain the same. Microsoft and Nokia have already reached a deal and on Friday, the software giant will finalize the deal by buying the phone maker for $7.3 billion. There is even a certain speculation that Nokia could be renamed as 'Microsoft Mobile'. While the rumor isn't official yet, Microsoft is taking over Nokia's devices and services division anyway and only time will tell if we will keep hearing the name 'Nokia'.
As the Finnish phone company and Microsoft close in on the deal, we take a look at the glorious history of Nokia with some of its most iconic and important phones that it ever produced. Some of these phones completely changed the mobile industry forever. Nokia might be struggling right now but there was a time when it was known to set the standards in mobile phone industry. Here are the 10 phones that take us back to the glorious days of Nokia.
1. N95
Released in 2007, this Symbian handset was one of the most sophisticated and well-designed Nokia smartphone ever. Sporting a brilliant hardware at the time, the phone gained huge popularity. N95 was the phone that Apple looked forward to beat with its iPhone. It came with a brilliant 5MP camera, navigator, a two-way sliding design, GPS and Flash-compatible web browser. For us, it was the first ever smartphone that could take photos, play movies and music, run games, worked as a telephone (of course) and could comfortably fit in our pockets.
2. Nokia E71
An elegant business smartphone from Nokia's Eseries. It was perhaps the best QWERTY smartphone other than Blackberry at the time of its release in 2008. It ran on Symbian OS v9.2 and is still comes with Series 60 3rd Edition. The phone was a delight for business users as it was optimized for mobile email and messaging services which was made even easier by the keyboard. It featured a decent 3.2MP camera and supported Wi-Fi and 3G. When it came to India, we were still quite far from running it on a 3G network.
3. Nokia 3310
Hands down, this was one of the most popular mobile phone at the time of its release in 2002. Till the time Nokia stopped manufacturing, 126 million units of the phone had already been sold. Till date, this phone is one of the most successful phones ever. Developed by Copenhagen Nokia site in Denmark, the phone was extremely well-built and it even gained a cult following of its own. Nokia 3315, a variant of this phone, became extremely popular in India for its SMS features. No matter how many times you dropped the 3310 from your hand, somehow it just didn't break. It also came with one of the most popular mobile phone game ever, Snake II.
4. Nokia 7650
With the 7000 series, Nokia showed the world that when it came to designing mobile phones, the Finnish company was the one to watch out for. Nokia 7650 was one of the examples of how innovative design could sell thousands of handset units. Released in 2002, it was also the first smartphone to run a Symbian operating system and also the first to feature an integrated camera. The phone even featured in the hit movie, Minority Report. It came with a 104MHz CPU based on ARM-9 series, 4MB of RAM and 16MB ROM. It was also an excellent phone for emails and messaging.
5. Nokia 6600
Launched in the second quarter of 2003, Nokia 6600 was one of the most popular smartphones ever. The 6600 belonged to Nokia 6xxx Classic Business Series of mobile phones. Running on Symbian OS-based Nokia Series 60 platform, the phone is considered as a trend-setter of its time. It came with a VGA camera, music and video players, Bluetooth and a VGA camera. Nokia stopped the production of 6600 handsets in 2007. You might still remember looking for Java and .sis games and apps so that you could install them on this phone in case you owned it back then.
6. Nokia N73
Officially described as a "multimedia computer" by Nokia, N73 was released in 2006. The feature that made this phone stand out in the 'N' series was its 3.2MP autofocus camera. The 'N' series from Nokia was designed as a high-end mobile phone series at that time and the N73 was the most powerful one in the series. It came with dual CPU ARM-9 processor clocked at 220MHz. It also featured an S60 3rd Edition Symbian-based operating system. Due to the popularity of the phone, Nokia released three more editions of the phone. The first one was the Music Edition smartphone which featured a dedicated multimedia button on the keypad. Nokia later released another Internet Edition of N73 which retained the multimedia button. The last edition of N73 was the Special Edition which came with the same hardware as the other editions but came pre-loaded with Islamic applications as the phone was made for Middle East, North Africa and Indonesia only.
7. Nokia 8210
This beauty from Nokia was released in 1999 and at the time it was the smallest and the lightest Nokia mobile phone in the market. Another huge selling-point of the phone was its customization option that Nokia provided for the phone. The 8210 came with removable Xpress-on covers and a user could choose from six differently coloured covers. Later, more colour options were available in the market from third-party manufacturers. The phone could store up to 250 names in its memory (which was huge at that time). It also came with speed dial, SMS and an infrared port for communicating with a compatible PC or a printer. Due to its iconic design at that time, the phone was featured in many movies such Charlie's AngelsSo Close,Accidental SpyAbout a BoyDomestic Disturbance and many more.
8. Nokia 5110
The phone that introduced us to mobile phones was the Nokia 5110. Released in 1998, it came with a simple interface and easy to use functions. It was a rugged GSM mobile phone that didn't bother people much in case they dropped it. Featuring an excellent battery life, it was also the first phone to feature the famous mobile game, Snake. Users could replace the faceplate which allowed them to customize their 5110. During its time, it was one of the most popular mobile phones. Even the screen of the phone was sturdy and didn't break easily. It was the first mobile phone that gave users customization options with its removable faceplates. The Nokia 5110 is clearly one of the most revolutionary mobile phones ever made.
9. Nokia N-Gage QD
N-Gage was Nokia's attempt at a mobile phone which could do some handheld gaming. It featured a Nokia series S60 platform and was released in late 2003. With the N-Gage, Nokia attempted a face-off against the likes of Nintendo and in some developing countries, it did succeed to an extent. It featured a rugged design, built-in Bluetooth, loud speakerphone and a solid battery life. Even though the first generation of N-Gage failed miserably due to its mono sound and a small screen, Nokia rectified the mistakes and came out with a second gen N-Gage QD which was much better designed. Running on Series 60 version of Symbian OS 6.0. The Nokia N-Gage QD is still one of the most coolest looking phones from Nokia ever. One of the things that killed this phone was that it never supported mp3 audio.
10. Nokia N8
N8 was the first mobile phone from Nokia that ran on the Symbian 3 mobile OS. It was Nokia's flagship device of 2010 and was released around the world on Oct 01, 2010. It features a 12MP camera also came with gritty features like an HDMI-out, USB On-The-Go support and Wi-Fi 802.11 b.g.n. It replaced Nokia another successful 'N' series phone, the N97. N8 still holds the record for the most customer pre-orders in Nokia's history. The Finnish phone maker sold almost 4 million N8 handsets. It has a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen with Gorilla glass protection and it was also the first one to feature a multi-touch. It had top-of-the-line specs at the time of its release, featuring a 680MHz ARM11 processor with 256MB of RAM. The 12MP autofocus lens on the back is a Carl Zeiss optics lens with xenon flash.

GDCA to permit use of mobiles, laptops during flight take-off

GDCA to permit use of mobiles, laptops during flight take-off
Airline passengers in India can now use their smartphones, tablets, etc when the flight is taking off. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has relaxed air-safety rules to allow the usage of Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) at all stages of a flight, including during take-off and landing.
The decision was made when domestic airlines raised the demand to allow the use of PEDs during all phases of flight. DGCA examined their demand in view of the latest regulations of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and US Federal Aviation Administration, which permit the use of PEDs on flights during all phases of a flight. The move now puts India at par with other countries that allow use of mobiles while flying except for making calls. Some foreign airlines have also started allowing passengers to make phone calls using satellite-based technology during flights but it still not widely done.
"The use of PEDs shall be in the non-transmitting mode commonly called flight/airplane mode. The amended civil aviation regulation also directs all operators for reporting of any suspected or confirmed PED interference or smoke or fire caused by PEDs to the DGCA. It also lays down the guidelines for the crew training,” the civil aviation regulator stated in a notification.
The DGCA's move has been welcomed by airlines, which was a long pending demand. “Good move by DGCA, now will be easier to monitor device usage (no more hidden phones) and passengers benefit as well,” Sanjiv Kapoor, chief operating officer of SpiceJet wrote on social networking site Twitter.

Sony has launched a new app for mobile photography enthusiasts. Called Background defocus, the new Sony application allows users to create a bokeh effect in your pictures, adding depth of field. The app is available via Play store for Sony handsets with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or later.
According to the description on Play store, Background defocus “simulates a shallow depth of field by creating a blurred out background. To use Background defocus, start the camera and select background defocus as camera mode. Tap the object you want to focus on in the viewfinder and tap the camera key to capture the image. You also have the option to change the blur level and blur effect with the controls on the screen.
Sony says to achieve the best results, focus on an object 15-45cm (0.5-1.5 feet) away and make sure the background object is 5 meter away from focus target.
You can check out the new app from the Play store.
Sony's Background defocus comes shortly after Google launched Google Camera as standalone app on the Play store. Google Camera also offers a similar lens blur effect.

Apple is also getting ready for its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) which takes place in the first week of June. The conference will start on 02 June and continue for four subsequent days. The company might reveal the next version of OS X at the conference and is also expected to release a preview build of the operating system for pre-release testing. Will Apple make the Seed Program for its next Mac OS free just like current one for Mavericks? Guess we will get to know about it when the time is right.

A look at Twitter's new web profile

A look at Twitter's new web profile
Twitter's new profile design for desktop is now available for everyone. Twitter recently announced rolling out a new design for a select number of users earlier this month. As you must have noticed already, Twitter's new design seems heavily inspired from Facebook's Timeline. There's a huge cover photo on top and a profile pic along with description is displayed on the left – massively similar to Facebook.
That said, there's a lot of other changes as well in your Twitter profile. At the top of your feed, you see the number of tweets posted, photos/videos posted, people you follow, and who follows you. It also shows the number of favorites.
The edit profile button has been shifted to the extreme left. The panel on the left show you suggestions on who to follow, popular accounts and find friends. Trends now appear below it. The top bar remains unchanged with home, notifications, discover and me buttons on the left, and message, settings and compose new Tweet on the left.
Now Twitter has made it easier to identify the “Best Tweets” as the tweets that have received more engagement will appear slightly larger. The new feature seems to be aimed at businesses, which may now find it easier to determine what content is getting popular.
Moreover, you can pin Tweets to the top of your page. Pinned tweet stays to the top of your profile until you unpin it or choose a different tweet to pin. Currently, Twitter allows you only to pin single Tweet. And, there's filtered Tweets, giving users option to choose which timeline to view checking out other profiles. The options include Tweets, Tweets with photos/videos, or Tweets and replies.
To get the new Twitter profile page, tap the “Get it Now” button popping on the top of the page.  Or, you can visit this page  from your desktop browser. Scroll to the bottom, click the 'Get it Now' button.

Scientists develop a new device to help bikers steer with their tongues

Scientists develop a new device to help bikers steer with their tongues
Who knew we could use our tongue for controlling our gadgets? Guess scientists at a Japanese university did.
The team of scientists at the Osaka Prefecture University has developed a steering device which will allow motorcyclists and skiers to help control their riding devices. The device needs to be installed in a helmet.
Bikers and skiers can use their tongues to put pressure on the device in a helmet to control their direction. The device is strapped with a 64 pressure-sensing elements to the cheeks of riders who can use various gestures like swipe up, swipe down, swipe left, swipe left and a push "click". The team carried out an initial experiment with the device on six volunteers and registered a 98 percent accuracy.
"The tongue is a well-developed muscle capable of fine-grain movements – so we thought it should be good for control interactions," said a team-member, Kai Kunze. He says, "My personal motivation here was skiing. I like to check factors like my speed while on the slope, yet it's quite cumbersome to take out a smartphone and use a touchscreen in the cold.
Kunze is now working on fitting the sensor in face masks that are worn to keep out the flu so that people can control phones without touching them.
