Hangouts for Android update brings merged conversations, homescreen widget
Google has rolled out a new update to its Android app. The update v2.1 includes a slew of new features such as SMS improvements and a new homescreen widget. Google is rolling out the new version of Hangouts for Android over the next few days.
While the changelog for version 2.1 hasn't appeared on the Play store as yet, Google has shared some of the highlights of the update in a Google+ post:
Merged conversations – Google now combines SMS and Hangout conversations with the same recipient in a single conversation. Users have the option to choose whether they want to send a message via Hangouts or SMS with the flip of a switch. There's also the option to merge and unmerge conversations. Improved Contact list – The new version shows two main sections in contacts – people you Hangout with and Phone Contacts.
 
Widget – Now you can add a Hangouts widget to homescreen, making it easier for quicker access to recent conversations.Among other important updates include performance improvements, with special focus on video calling, SMS and MMS reliability.
