Moto X+1 codenamed 'Victara' to be launched on all four US carriers

Moto X+1 codenamed 'Victara' to be launched on all four US carriers
According to a latest report from the popular tipster @evleaks, Motorola's Moto X 1 is codenamed 'Victara' and will first be launched in US on all the four (major) carriers. New rumors about Motorola's top-end smartphone have also begun to pour in. After successful launches of its lower-end smartphones like Moto G and E, it is likely that Motorola will create a huge stir with its X 1.
Just like the original Moto X, the launch pattern of the X 1 is likely to be similar. It will likely hit other smartphone markets later after the initial launch in US.
At the moment, there is no news available regarding specs on the Moto X 1. So far, rumors suggest that it will have 25 different back cover options in Moto Maker just like the Moto X. There will be some leather back cover options as well.
Recently, a listing on Motorola's US site listed a Moto X phone that was named as Moto X 1 and had a placeholder price tag of $400 which suggests that the smartphone may launch around that price.
Officially, Motorola has said that the upgrade to Moto X will be available in late summer.
Last week, Motorola launched its low-budget Android smartphone Moto E which has recieved great reception since its launch for its great value for money.

Samsung Galaxy S4, S4 mini price officially slashed in India

As expected, Samsung has officially slashed price of its older flagships Galaxy S4 and S4 mini in India. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is now listed on the company's official e-store for Rs. 31,814, while the S4 mini is listed at Rs. 19,278.
Samsung had launched the Galaxy S4 last year for Rs. 41,500, while the S4 mini launched with a price tag of Rs. 27,900. However, the smartphones saw a major price cut ahead of the launch of the new flagship, S5. The Galaxy S4 was recently spotted on e-commerce websites with price around Rs.30,000.
It's worth pointing out here Samsung's new flagship smartphone, S5, continues to be available online below the official price tag (Rs. 51,000). Flipkart is selling the white model for Rs. 40,990, while Snapdeal is selling the Black model for Rs. 39,431. However, Samsung has maintained that there's no official price cut for its new flagship smartphone.
Samsung in a statement said: “Samsung Electronics’ flagship smartphone, which was launched in March 2014, continues to be priced at Rs. 51,500. Galaxy Gear 2 is priced at Rs. 21,900 and both Galaxy Gear 2 Neo and Galaxy Gear Fit are priced at Rs. 15,900 each. This pricing is based on robust demand and increasing sales. The company further added that reports claiming Samsung Electronics has revised prices of Galaxy S5 are false and baseless. Galaxy S5 was made available in India through Samsung’s retail stores and online sites starting April 11, 2014.”
With the official price cut of the S4 and S4 mini, Samsung will hope to increase its share in the crowded Rs. 20,000-30,000 segment

Google replacing Nexus line with Android Silver, rumours resurface

Rumours about Google abandoning its popular Nexus series resurfaced on the web this weekend. According to @evleaks, Google will not be announcing a Nexus 6 at its forthcoming Google I/O event. New rumours reiterate the Nexus will be replaced by a new project called “Android Silver”, by 2015. LG handset, running a Qualcomm MSM8994, is rumoured to be among first Silver devices.
"There is no Nexus 6. Farewell, Nexus. Don't worry, there's a silver lining to this cloud... Android Silver, circa February 2015,” said Evleaks in a series of tweets last week.
Right now there's not much of information available about Google's new initiative, though recent reports claimed Android Silver will serve as a programme for top-end Android smartphones, similar to current Google Play Editions of top-end phones such as HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4. The new Google devices will include no third-party bloatware as well as receive timely software updates, similar to Apple's format.
Google has reportedly stepped up efforts to improve Android branding. Back in March, multiple media reports claimed'powered by Android' branding will be mandatory on the new smartphones. The new Android Silver project is likely to help Google sort out its Android fragmentation as well as keep manufacturers such as Samsung to push their open source OS.

Google's Nexus series has seen a massive popularity worldwide mainly because of their affordable pricing and stock Android experience. It's not yet clear how the new initiative will impact the existing Nexus users.

Moto E: Battery performance test and comparison

After the successful launch of Moto G and Moto X, Motorola announced the low-cost Moto E in India in an attempt to grab the market share of the sub-10k Android smartphones. While we already know the specs and the performance capability of Moto E, we now carry out our standard battery test to determine the potential of battery on the smartphone. There is a 1980mAh battery pack on the Moto E which sounds pretty good for a Rs.7,000 smartphone.
As you all know, we first charge the smartphone to a full 100% and then run a Full-HD video for one hour to determine the amount of battery loss. We also compare the results with other smartphones to see how it competes with other handsets. Here is how Moto E stands up to other smartphones when it comes to battery life.
The results clearly prove that the battery on the Moto E provides the best battery backup in its category, and furthermore, it even beats it's elder brother, Moto G. The smartphone didn't impress a lot in the benchmark performance tests but the battery backup is way better than its competition

YouTube in talks to buy videogame streaming service Twitch: Report

Google's video streaming service YouTube, is said to have reached a deal to buy Twitch, the most popular videogame streaming service. YouTube is said to have offered Twitch $1 billion as an all-cash offer even though both the companies have declined to comment on the deal. Google had acquired YouTube for around $1.65 billion in 2006.
Twitch is a San Francisco-based video streaming service that lets users upload and watch live gameplay videos for free. The videos can be streamed from Microsoft Xbox 360, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles.
Twitch is also reported to have received offers from Microsoft and other companies but preferred YouTube as its partner. If the Microsoft-Twitch deal had gone through, the software giant would most likely have made the service as an Xbox exclusive which could have harmed Twitch's traffic from other consoles.
Despite not a well-known name except in gaming circles, Twitch is known to push more traffic than Facebook and Amazon in its peak hours. The company was launched in 2011 by Justin Kan and Emmett Shear who are the co-founders of Justin.tv. Shear is currently the CEO of the company. At the time of its foundation, the service raised about $35 million in funding from investors like Bessermer Venture partners, Alsop Louie Partners, WestSummit Capital, Take-Two Interactive Software, Thrive Capital and Draper Associates.
Even though Twitch is still available on Xbox, it will interesting to see how YouTube deals with the Microsoft-owned platform as the two companies have had a bad relationship in recent times. Previously, Google had declined to develop a YouTube app for Windows and Windows Phone platform. Later, when Microsoft developed the app itself, Google revoked the developer API of that app.
Twitch is available on iOS and Android mobile platforms as an app as well. The service streams content in high definition and offers browsing option of the top streamers. Users can browse the service by game titles and also allows registered users to follow their favorite channels. On the PC, Twitch has been integrated into PC as a software as well (other than the in-browser support) through EA's Origin Software, Ubisoft's Uplay, and Nvidia's ShadowPlay feature.
Wall Street Journal on the other hand, has also confirmed the reports but says that the deal might not be finalized soon. Despite the rumors, YouTube and Twitch haven't denied the reports either.

Facebook to launch Snapchat rival 'Slingshot': Reports

With increased focus on mobile platform, especially the messaging segment, Facebook is reportedly planning to launch a video-chatting application called Slingshot. According to reports, the new app will be very similar to popular Snapchat and will be released by this month.
Reports further say Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg is overseeing the project after the company failed to acquire Snapchat. The company has been working on the app for months. The app is said to come with a simple UI that will make sending self-destructing video messages even easier.
Facebook recently killed its standalone Poke app on Apple app store. It may be recalled Facebook's Poke app was supposed to compete with Snapchat as it offered up to 10 second of photo and video messages. However, Poke couldn't deliver the kind of results Facebook might have expected.
The social networking giant has increased its focus on mobile messaging as it took over the popular WhatsApp. "WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable. I've known Jan for a long time and I'm excited to partner with him and his team to make the world more open and connected,” Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO had said.
Giving a stiff competition to Snapchat is not the only challenge Facebook's new service will be facing. Maintaining anonymity will one of the main issues for Facebook, considering Snapchat lets users sign up with minimum of information and only shows username to others on the service. Facebook, on the other hand, has been long criticised for poor privacy policies. As expected, Slingshot will be tied with Facebook profile, which a lot of people might not prefer.

3D printer Zeus teleports objects by "faxing" them to other printers

3D printer Zeus teleports objects by "faxing" them to other printers
AIO Robotics has created the world's first 3D printer which can, other than printing 3D objects, send them to other printers using the internet. The printer is called Zeus and is the first of its kind measuring 8x6x5.7 inches.
Zeus can print objects at 80 microns and scans at 125 microns. It has a 7-inch touch screen on the front which helps users manage their print jobs easily. It also contains a replaceable extruder which helps in case things break. The basic principle of working in Zeus is just like any other 3D printer as it uses a standard plastic filament system.
Even though 3D printers are extremely cheap now (for as low as $200) but unlike Zeus, they cannot be used to work together properly especially while transferring files between them.
Zeus also uses Precision Scanning, which lets users refine print data and convert it into a print-ready mesh model. The resulting model is more smooth and realistic. Users can also use the printer without the need of any additional PC as it comes with an onboard processor (Exynos 4412, Quad-Core at 1.7GHz) which performs meshing and slicing on its own. It features a 2MP Full-HD CMOS camera and supports USB flash drives. It can be connected to the internet via Wi-Fi.
Zeus is yet to hit the markets and as of now, it is only available for pre-order. It was started as project on Kickstarter which successfully completed funding on Oct 4, 2013 with the pledge of raising $100,000.
Developer of Zeus, AIO Robotics is a tech company which makes All-in-One 3D printers and was founded in 2013.

Flappy Bird to return as a multiplayer game in August

Creator of the hit indie game Flappy Bird, Dong Nyugen, has revealed that he is bringing the game back in August. Nyugen revealed the details in an interview to CNBC. He also said that the game will incorporate a new multiplayer version as well which he hopes will lessen the addictive powers of the game.
Nyugen said that he saw first-hand, how Flappy Bird was negatively affecting people's lives. Making a return in August, the creator says that he has added a mulitplayer feature which will prevent the negative addiction of the game. It is still not clear how the new feature will prevent mindless addiction as the details have not been revealed yet.

At the peak of the game's popularity, Nyugen was reportedly making $50,000 per day from the game. He had taken the game off app stores for Android and iOS devices in February earlier this year saying that it became an addictive product. The popularity of the game became so massive that an iPhone with Flappy Bird installed in it went up for sale on eBay for almost $90,000!
Right after the game was deleted, clones of the game started hitting the app stores which were later rejected by Apple and Google for containing the word "flappy" in their titles. Popular mobile game maker, Rovio, also joined the race with a Flappy Bird inspired game called 'Retry'.
None of the clones have been able to gain similar popularity as the original game. Fans of the game are already excited for the game's return.

In focus: MTS India's free Wi-Fi service on Rapid Metro Gurgaon

Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited (SSTL), which provides telecom services under the brand MTS, today announced its partnership with Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Limited (RMGL) to provide free Wi-Fi services on all trains running on the 5.1 Km long six station corridor. The new service covers all Rapid Metro trains and Sikanderpur, IndusInd Bank, Cyber City, Phase 2 and Micromax Moulsari Avenue metro stations. With the new initiative, 30,000 daily commuters of Rapid Metro will get to access Internet speeds up to 9.8 Mbps (based on MTS' 3G Plus network) for free.
As an introductory offer, MTS is offering its free Wi-Fi service for a period of six months.
Getting started
To get started with MTS' free Wi-Fi service on Rapid Metro, you need to visit an MTS kiosk on the Rapid Metro stations and take a free WiFi coupon – scratch the same to get the Activation PIN. There are 5 MTS kiosks on 4 Rapid Metro stations, two at Sikanderpur and one each at IndusInd Bank Cyber City, Phase 2 and Micromax Moulsari Avenue.
Check for available Wi-Fi networks on your device – select “MTS 3GPLUS Wi-Fi” network.
On entering any URL, users will be automatically redirected to the MTS 3GPLUS WiFi page, select NEW USER option and enter a valid Mobile Number and the Activation PIN, click the ‘submit’ button.

Users will receive a password via SMS on the mobile number entered, use password & start surfing the internet.
Data speed
MTS' Wi-Fi service is based on its next generation CDMA services - Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Rev. B Phase II network, branded as the 3G Plus. The network is supposed to deliver data speeds of up to 9.8Mbps, which is equivalent or better than the current 3G network speeds.
We used the Wi-Fi service on the train as well as on the Phase 2 metro station. According to the speed tests, network speed was good enough for browsing and streaming. However, it will be interesting to see how MTS manages the network when many people try to go online.

Speed test on a laptop
Deployment
Explaining challenges faced by MTS while deploying the Wi-Fi network, Mr. Ashwani K Khillan said to Digit: “There were three major challenges. First was to provide network/connectivity on a moving object. Because the challenge in providing connectivity on a moving object is to ensure backhaul. Generally, the transmission points are fixed, but here we needed to have moving transmission points. That was our first challenge, which we overcome by using 3G Plus network.”
Second challenge was the clutter around the corridor. There are a lot of high rises, buildings and some really congested houses. These kind of clutter cause a lot of interference in the network. Thus, it was a huge challenge to plan a smooth network on the route. Third was how do we make sure we are able to authenticate users. Now we what we are doing is when someone buys our voucher, sends us his mobile number and activation pin, we send a SMS confirmation to authenticate the customer. This was to keep track of data usage and for other relevant usages”
Installation didn't take much time. Most of the time was on planning and fine tuning the plan. The installation did not take more than 10 days, while planning took 4-5 weeks. And then afterwards optimisation, which again two weeks of time,” he added.
On possible challenges faced if such system was to be implemented in the Delhi metro, Mr. Khillan said: “Now I think one-tenth of the challenge we have already completed. For technical people, it was a heaven in disguise that we were able to start at a very small scale. If we would have been asked to implement the system in the whole of DMRC, obviously the challenge would have been much bigger. We have learnt a lot from the Rapid Metro Gurgaon deployment and look to use the experience elsewhere as well.”
Expansion
After having launched the Wi-Fi service on Rapid Metro Gurgaon, the obvious question that strikes whether MTS will launch a similar service on the Delhi Metro. MTS does not rule out the possibility, as it says: “Our plans are ambitious. In this case, if this particular experience will be successful, we will try to continue our development in the transport industry. Our plan is to significantly increase Wi-Fi network. But, we need to launch the service in one line to understand the customers, quality of service and other related things. This experience will be important for us. After its success, we may negotiate with DMRC regarding implementation of such service in Delhi Metro.”
...the idea is to take this further and reach out to more public and cover public locations across the country. This way we can reach out to data consumers more effectively”.
Besides Rapid Metro Gurgaon, MTS India is also looking at opportunities to provide similar services in other public places including metros & educational institutes in other cities.
KV Ramachandra, COO, Delhi Circle, MTS India, Shiva Keshavan MTS Brand Ambassador, ... , Sanjiv Rai, MD & CEO - Rapid Metro Gurgaon, Ashwani Khillan, CTO - MTS India
A small but worthwhile step forward
Evidently, there's an increasing demand for faster data network, especially on the go. Last year, we saw Huawei and Bharti Airtel teaming up to provide Airtel 3G to passengers travelling in EasyCabs in Delhi NCR. Moreover, Indian Railways offers free Wi-Fi on New Delhi-Howrah Rajdhani train. At the recently held LTE India 2014, the industry contemplated Wi-Fi hotspots as a serious option to alleviate the stress on cellular networks.
If MTS' initiative turns out to be a success, it will encourage other telecom operators to come up with similar Wi-Fi hotspot services in the NCR as well as other parts of the country.

Moto E: 10 reasons to buy it

Moto E: 10 reasons to buy it
Priced at Rs 6,999 only, its hard to ignore the all new Moto E as Motorola says that its "priced for all". The company made a big comeback in the mobile phone market with its mid-range wonder Moto G which is still a great buy at its price. Even its higher-end Moto X has been doing great as compared to smartphones from other manufacturers. With the new Moto E, Motorola breaks even more barriers and gives you some exceptional features at a very affordable price. Here are the 10 reasons why we think that you should buy the Moto E.
1. KitKat to boot
It is quite rare to hear that a cheaply priced smartphone runs on the latest version of Android. Companies other than Motorola keep launching new smartphones that cost a lot more than the Moto E but are still unable to launch them with the latest taste of Android OS. Motorola defies that concept and gives you Moto E with the latest version of Android right out of the box. The smartphone features Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
2. Android updates
Motorola promises that all of its phones will be among the first ones (apart from Nexus devices) to recieve the latest Android updates. It says that Moto E "will receive at least one software update to bring it up to date with the current KitKat 4.4.3 operating system." Looking at the development of Android by Google, Moto E is likely to recieve even more updates in future as Android becomes even more optimized for low-end phones. Working closely with Google gives Motorola even more advantage in the race to latest Android updates. So far, Motorola has delivered in this matter on all of its Android devices.
3. Specifications
An Android smartphone that costs only Rs 6,999 featuring such specifications is quite exceptional. Even the Indian manufacturers, who are known to launch low-cost devices with good hardware, will find it difficult to tackle Motorola on this front. Also, the way these specs handle KitKat is superb. There is no lag and navigation feels smooth except a few hiccups while browsing heavy sites or gaming. 1GB of RAM gives enough space to run multiple apps at the same time.
4. Build quality and design
Moto E feels just as premium as the Moto G. It has a similar design with a curved back and the glossy front panel. The phone feels solid in hand as it weighs almost the same as its bigger brother. As we have always stressed, the phones with these screen dimensions sizes are the ideal size for a durable smartphone. The phone neither feels too large nor does it feel too small. It's perfect for one-hand operation and is made of excellent polycarbonate plastic that feels smooth and premium unlike other low-cost phones.
5. Battery life
One of the strongest features of Moto E is its battery. The smartphone packs a 1980mAh battery which is excellent for such a low-cost phone. This battery packs enough juice to last a full day of single charge. It is marginally smaller than the one on Moto G which packs a 2070mAh battery but considering the lower-end hardware, the battery on Moto E is more than good enough to keep you connected to your networks throughout the day. Motorola rightly claims that Moto E has the "power to last".
6. Gorilla glass 3 protection and Nano CoatingMotorola surprised everyone at the launch event when it announced that the Moto E features high-end screen protection. Such protection has only been found on premium devices that cost way much more. Moto E comes with the best screen protection which truly makes it "built to last". With such a high-class protection of Gorilla Glass 3 for your screen, you don't need to worry about everyday scratches. Also, Moto E doesn't just have Gorilla Glass 3 protection to help you worry less about your phone. It also features Nano Coating which makes it water resistant to occasional splashes. So even if your Moto E got wet or fell in water, it still has much better chances of surviving as compared to any other phone in its category. Water-proofing features were a thing of premium high-cost smartphones only. Motorola shows that its possible on low-cost devices as well. We will put the feature to a test in our detailed review soon.
7. Screen quality
At 4.3 inches, the screen on the Moto E is the best in its class. Currently, no other phone in its category beats the quality of the display on this phone. The display is bright and at a resolution of 960x540 pixels, it is sharp enough as well. It features a respectable 256ppi (pixles per inch) which makes reading text easy and, photos and videos look great. Even while zooming in on text in websites, the text looks sharp and easy to read. For this price, it is clearly the best screen on a smartphone in its class. It also features smudge-proof coating on the front which keeps it clean of the usual residue left by touches and dust.
8. Accessories and support
Just like the Moto G, Moto E comes with a wide range of cases and covers known as Motorola Shells which are sold separately. Users will get a wide variety of colors to choose from. Motorola gives 9 colors for Shells and 5 different colors for its Grip shells, which are designed to provide protection from physical damage. The Shells give your phone a different personality with each different cover. You can buy your desired color shell on Flipkart which is also the lone seller of the Motorola devices in India.
9. Compact and comfortableFeaturing dimensions of 124.8x64.8x12.3 (mm), Moto E is compact and durable. It easily fits into the pockets and is easy to carry around. It weighs 142 grams, which is quite ideal. Just like the Moto G, its ergonomics are designed to fit well in hand. It might be quite thick in the middle but its very slim towards the edges (6.2mm). This gives it a sleek look and makes it extremely comfortable to use. Even the curve on the back makes it easier to hold especially while moving or walking around.
10. It's a Moto
Motorola is undoubtedly a trusted mobile phone brand. It has already sold millions of smartphones in India, Brazil and many countries of Europe. Not only does it provide excellent products, it also gives an excellent after-sale support. After-sales support has been a huge problem for Indian manufacturers who are able to provide good devices at reasonable rates. With Moto E, you don't have to worry about such problems. Also with a Motorola device, you can always rely on the company with the best possible Android experience and support.
Moto E is a marvellous smartphone which is tailor-made for users who want excellent value at a very affordable price. It might be missing features like flash and a front camera but looking at its price, it is the currently the best phone that Rs 6,999 can buy right now.
