Telecom operators may not be wholly responsible for the rising rate of calls being dropped, as a recent report claims that mid-range smartphones may be guilty as well. According to analytics firm RedMango, smartphones priced under Rs. 20,000 face up to 67% more call drops as compared to phones priced over Rs. 30,000. In addition, the firm found that the type and version of the operating system also significantly impacts call quality in smartphones. Umang Shah, Co-Founder and Head of Innovation and Marketing at RedMango Analytics said , “Since awareness of this is low among users in India, mobile operators must compensate for this by designing their networks for the lowest performing smartphones that is available in the market.”
According to Redmango’s report, the key reasons contributing to dropped calls were poor connectivity, quality and network failures. The report noted that in 2015, only 4% of the total calls dropped were due to poor coverage, while 59.1% were a result of poor connection quality. About 36.9% of all calls that were dropped were due to network faults.
