ANDROID 5.0 LOLLIPOP OTA UPDATES DELAYED DUE TO WIFI BUG

Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA updates delayed due to WiFi bug
Google has just run into a big stumbling block with the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. According to reports, the OTA updates for the Nexus devices have been delayed because of a WiFi bug in Android 5.0 that is draining the battery of the devices.
Android 5.0 Lollipop had started rolling out to devices some days ago, but it seems that the updates have been stopped because of this issue. The Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013) and Nexus 10 will be the first devices to get the update. Google has itself confirmed the bug on its Bug Tracker page as well.
Users ran into the issue on the Nexus 5 first and the Bug Tracker page is filled with queries about the same. That said, it's not yet confirmed whether the WiFi tracking bug is the cause for the battery drain, but both the bug and the issue exist in Lollipop.
Google had said in its I/O conference back in June that the Lollipop update would bring better battery life to Android smartphones, along with the battery saver feature. Many smartphone makers have already confirmed the update on their various devices, but the discovery of this bug may delay their plans as well.

WHATSAPP NOW TELLS YOU WHEN YOUR MESSAGES ARE READ

WhatsApp now tells you when your messages are read
WhatsApp, that showed double check marks if a sent message had been received, now turns those check marks blue if the message has been read.
WhatsApp's FAQ section explains that the feature will be implemented in group chat and broadcast messages as well. The two checkmarks will turn blue after every participant within the group has read the message. This feature has been pushed over-the-air to both iOS and Android versions of the app and is not part of any update.
According to reports, WhatsApp will also be adding VOIP (Voice over IP) capabilities soon. The feature was spotted on WhatsApp's iOS app in the company's latest update for the iPhone on September 8. The feature will allow the messaging app's 600 million users to make free calls over WiFi and cellular. WhatsApp's CEO Jan Kuom had confirmed the free voice calling feature in February this year post Facebook's acquisition and stated that it will be launched on Android and iOS, followed by BlackBerry, Nokia and Microsoft's platforms.
WhatsApp recently announced that it has over 70 million active users in India, making it one if the biggest markets for the messaging app. Neeraj Arora, vice-president of WhatsApp, said at the fifth annual INK Conference in Mumbai, "We have 70 million active users here who use the application at least once a month.”

SAMSUNG LEADS INDIAN SMARTPHONE MARKET, MICROMAX AT NO.2: REPORT

Samsung leads Indian smartphone market, Micromax at no.2: Report
According to a new report, Samsung Electronics had a larger share than Micromax of India's smartphone market in September, while Nokia took third spot. The report showed that domestic mobile manufacturers Lava and Karbonn are on the fourth and fifth spot.
Research firm GFK's data for July, August and September showed that Samsung Electronics held a 33% market share at the end of the period after gaining over a percentage point from August. Domestic manufacturer Micromax was second with more than 18% market share while Microsoft owned Nokia, was at number 3 with 12% share.
According to the report, in the wider market which includes feature phones, Samsung held about a fourth of the market share while Nokia was at the No. 2 spot with 21% market share. Micromax came in third with 13.5% share.
GFK numbers, which it claims are based on actual sales, shows a contrast with the report published by CounterPoint Research, Cybermedia Research (CMR) and International Data Corporation (IDC), for April-June quarter, which had stated that the gap was closing between Samsung and Micromax.
Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research had stated that Micromax was the leading overall handset vendor with 16.6% market share in the April-June period, while Samsung had 14.4% share. The report had stated that Samsung was still the leader in the smartphone market, however the Indian vendor was catching up quickly.
Counterpoint's director of research, Neil Shah, stated that the preliminary data for the July-September period also showed the same trend, with Samsung trailing Micromax in the overall market, but the reverse in the smartphone segment.
"We track shipments, i.e. what is sold into the channel from the OEM and that is pan-India and not sell-through in our quarterly Market Monitor program," Shah said, explaining the difference in methodology compared to GFK.
A spokesperson for Samsung India did not comment on market share figures specifically, but stated that Samsung is a clear leader in the mobile handsets business across price categories.

LENOVO LAUNCHES SISLEY S90, AN IPHONE 6 LOOKALIKE, IN CHINA

Lenovo launches Sisley S90, an iPhone 6 lookalike, in China
The obsession of Chinese manufacturers with the iPhone just doesn't end and the new Lenovo Sisley S90, underscores that point. The images of the phone which have been doing the rounds make it quite clear that the phone has been designed with the new iPhone 6 in mind. Lenovo is launching the phone is China for Yuan 1,999 (Rs. 20,000 approx)
The Lenovo Sisley S90 boasts of a 5-inch AMOLED HD screen and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 chipset. The quad-core CPU is clocked at 1.2 GHz and is accompanied by 1GB of RAM. The phone offers 16GB internal storage, and uses a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front facing camera. The sleek looking phone has dual-SIM capabilities, NFC and packs a 2300mAh battery.
Gizmobic reported that even the webpage set up for the Sisley S90 looks like a blatant copy of the iPhone 6’s webpage. The phone is only available in China as of now and may or may not see a global launch but it does beg the question, when will this obsession with copying Apple end?

Iconic Apple-1 Computer Hits the Auction Block

Apple-1 Computer
A vintage Apple-1 personal computer could be yours, as it will hit the auction block at Christie's in New York City on Dec. 11. It is the only known surviving Apple-1 computer to have been sold directly by Steve Jobs out of his parents' garage.

And it still works. Recently booted up, the computer ran its original software, Microsoft Basic, and the Apple-1 "Star Trek" game.

Charles Ricketts purchased the Apple-1 almost 40 years ago, on July 27, 1976, directly from Jobs in Los Altos, California, for just $600, according to a canceled check that will be included with the sale. Now, the computer could fetch between $400,000 and $600,000. That price is on a par with similar purchases of the iconic computer: A mint-condition Apple-1 computer sold for a jaw-dropping $905,000 in a Christie's auction in October. Another, signed by co-founder Steve Wozniak, recently sold for $671,000 at an auction in Germany, and a third Apple-1 signed by "Woz" recently fetched $387,750 at a Christie's auction. That one, however, had more wear and tear than the "Ricketts" computer.

After its initial purchase, the Ricketts Apple-1 personal computer came into the hands of Bruce Waldack, an entrepreneur who later fell on hard times and died in 2007. The computer was sold at a sheriff's auction in 2004, and a Virginia collector named Bob Luther acquired it.

At the time, the Apple Computer Company (now called Apple Inc.) was made up of just Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, and their office was the Los Altos garage of Jobs' parents. From 1976 onward, the team hand-built 200 Apple-1s, which were priced at $666.66. There are thought to be just 15 working Apple-1 computers in the world.

Also on auction is an archive of proofs, design sketches and diagrams from Ron Wayne, who co-founded Apple Computer Company along with Wozniak and Jobs, but left the venture after 11 days. The archive also contains proofs of the original Apple-1 operating manual, which are emblazoned with what may be the oldest surviving example of the company's logo.

Isolated Amazon Tribes Monitored with Space-Age Technology

Mashco-Piro Tribe
The vast jungles of the Amazon rainforest harbor tribes mostly isolated from the outside world, whose way of life, largely unchanged for millennia, is now increasingly threatened by intrusions from modern civilization.

Now, scientists reveal they can monitor these "uncontacted tribes" using satellites, which would allow safe, inexpensive and noninvasive tracking of these tribes in order to protect them from outside threats.

The Amazon is the largest and most diverse rainforest in the world— about 10 percent of all known species on Earth dwell there. The long-term survival of the estimated 50 to 100 isolated tribeswho live in the region is under increasing threat of disease and violence as the tribes encounter the rest of the world.

In order to help conserve these uncontacted Indians, researchers need accurate estimates of their populations. One way to collect this data involves flying over their villages, but such overflights are both expensive and invasive, and could instill fear among these indigenous peoples. Another strategy involves encountering individuals on the ground, but among other risks, scientists could accidentally spread disease to members of the tribes.

Instead, scientists investigated whether satellite imaging could monitor uncontacted tribes. "Since college some 15 years ago, I've always been fascinated by these isolated tribes," said lead study author Robert Walker, an anthropologist at the University of Missouri at Columbia. "I've always wanted to study them in a safe way, and remote sensing offers that."

The investigators focused on indigenous groups concentrated near the headwaters of the Envira River, located at the border of Brazil and Peru. These include the Mashco-Piro, nomadic hunter-gatherers who live in Peru's densely forested Madre de Dios region, and a number of Pano-speaking farming societies.

The researchers combed through satellite images to look at five isolated villages previously identified via overflights by Brazilian officials. They confirmed these locations and measured the sizes of their villages, houses and gardens. The villages ranged from a small one of about 50 people to a large and growing village of about 300 people.

"We can find isolated villages with remote sensing and study them over time," Walker told Live Science. "We can ask: Are they growing? Do they move?"

Surprisingly, based on the sizes of the houses and villages, the scientists find the population densities of these isolated villages is about 10 times greater, on average, than other villages of indigenous Brazilian peoples. This may be due to the fact that they have to live closer together because they are not as good at clearing the forest, since they lack steel machetes and axes as well as modern devices like chainsaws and tractors, the researchers said. The tribes may also be afraid of spreading out due to fear of being attacked by outsiders, Walker said.

The researchers now plan to focus on 29 more isolated villages to "look at their ecology — that is, elevation, distance from rivers and roads — and use this to model where else we can find more isolated villages," Walker said.

The scientists detailed their findings online today (Nov. 5) in the journal Royal Society Open Science.

GMAIL FOR ANDROID V5.0 RELEASED, ADDS SUPPORT FOR NON-GMAIL ACCOUNTS

Gmail for Android v5.0 released, adds support for non-Gmail accounts
Google has rolled out a new version of Gmail for Android based on its new Material design. The update brings a revamped modern look and adds supports for all e-mail accounts. The new Gmail version 5.0 is meant for devices running Android 4.0 or higher.
The Gmail 5.0 for Android has a redesigned user interface that sports a more modern look and brings a few navigational improvements that make the app easier to use, including a new reply button at the bottom of messages. The update also brings some design tweaks that make it easier to switch between different accounts and inbox categories on tablet versions of the app. However the biggest addition is the support of non-Gmail accounts, earlier the app was limited to Gmail and Google apps only.
Google wrote in a blog post "We know some of you have email addresses that aren’t Gmail (it’s okay to admit it). The updated Gmail app now supports all email providers, which means you can now set up a separate inbox for, say, your Yahoo Mail or Outlook.com addresses using POP/IMAP."
Google has also announced a revamped Calendar app for Android based on Material design, which makes scheduling and planning more efficient for users. The app will now automatically turn hotel reservations and flight confirmations in your Gmail account into calendar events and will even track flight numbers and check-in time. The update is already available for Android 5.0 based Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices and will be rolled out for Android 4.1 or higher devices in the coming weeks.

NEXUS 6 COMING ON NOV. 18 FOR RS. 40,000 FOR 32GB VARIANT

Nexus 6 coming on Nov. 18 for Rs. 40,000 for 32GB variant
Waiting for the Nexus 6? This will interest you then. The new version of Google’s Nexus smartphone will reportedly be launched for around Rs. 40,000 for the 32GB version, while the 64GB should be priced around Rs. 45,000. The device was recently listed on Flipkart with a ‘coming soon’ tag.
The device will reportedly be sold on Flipkart and Google Play and comes with the Snapdragon 805 SoC and Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box. Being made by Motorola, the Nexus 6 looks like a larger version of the Moto X (2nd Gen) with its 5.9 inch quad-HD display.
It also has a 3220 mAh battery along with 3GB of RAM and a 13 MP rear camera with OIS. Reports say that the device will be launched in India before December 10 and may even be launched within this month. There are also reports that the device will come to India on November 18. This is most likely going to be when the device becomes available for pre-order though, considering that some international reports have said that the Nexus 6 shipments will start sometime in December.
Meanwhile, Google has started rolling out updates for Android 5.0 to its other Nexus devices, which makes the launch of the new version imminent. The Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013) and Nexus 10 will be the first smartphones to get the new update, with the Android One devices likely to follow. Other manufacturers have also announced the update for their devices, with Motorola being the first off the mark.

ANDROID 5.0 LOLLIPOP TO BRING BETTER SD CARD SUPPORT FOR APPS

Android 5.0 Lollipop to bring better SD card support for apps
One of the most hated features of Android 4.4 KitKat will be rectified by Android 5.0 Lollipop. The next version of Android will allow developers to take advantage of the SD card. According to a post by Google, Lollipop will allow applications to have read and write access to folders on the removable storage, including the folders that they don’t own. Google had talked about addressing the memory card issue earlier in its developer conference this year.
Below is the post by Google.
Hey all, in KitKat we introduced APIs that let apps read/write file in app-specific directories on secondary storage devices, such as SD cards.
We heard loud and clear that developers wanted richer access beyond these directories, so in Lollipop we added the new ACTION_OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE intent. Apps can launch this intent to pick and return a directory from any supported DocumentProvider, including any of the shared storage supported by the device. Apps can then create, update, and delete files and directories anywhere under the picked tree without any additional user interaction. Just like the other document intents, apps can persist this access across reboots.
This gives apps broad, powerful access to manage files while still involving the user in the initial selection process. Users may choose to give your app access to a narrow directory like "My Vacation Photos," or they could pick the top-level of an entire SD card; the choice is theirs.
This means that developers will now be able to give their apps permissions to access the removable storage on your device. This includes editing data on the SD card and accessing other folders and writing to them. So your file managers will be able to move files around on the SD card.
