CES 2014: Intel to officially support Android and Windows dual-booting systems

We have already started seeing it and now here is the confirmation from the horse’s mouth. Intel has officially said that their processors will work on dual-boot computers that run both Android and Windows OS. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich recently said at the CES 2014 that Intel is now the first microprocessor company to support devices that support the dual-boot OS feature.
Consumers using such systems will be able to switch between Windows and Android with just a press of a button. We did see thisfeature earlier on the Asus Transformer Book Trio which was launched in India last month. The convertible tablet can dual boot on Windows 8 and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
This is a welcoming feature no doubt, but the success of these devices is still dodgy. Consumers will definitely love the access to both the OS on a single device, but a lot depends on the functionality as well as flexibility. Just recently, Micromax announced a new tablet called the Canvas Lap Tab which dual boots on Windows 8 and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

CES 2014: A digital Bluetooth-enabled toothbrush showcased

Kolibree has unveiled world's first internet connected toothbrush at the CES 2014 in Las Vegas. The smart toothbrush will analyze the users brushing habits and is aimed at improving dental hygiene.
The Kolibree toothbrush comes with a built in sensor that detects how much tartar is being removed in a brushing. It records the customers brushing activity and communicates the information wirelessly to a smartphone app.
The device from French-based startup Kolibree aims “to reinvent oral care,” according to co-founder Loic Cessot. “The technology in the industry has not evolved for years,” Cessot told AFP. “The idea is not to brush stronger, but smarter. When you use a normal toothbrush you never really know what you’ve cleaned. It might be 30 percent. The only person who really knows is the dentist.”
The device will go on sale later this year and will "tell you whether you brushed long enough and reached the hard-to-reach but important parts of your teeth and gums" stated Cessot. Kolibree started by Cessot and former Microsoft and Google executive Thomas Serval, will launch the brush later this year along with a free smartphone app via Kickstarter. The smart toothbrush will be available from $99 to $200 depending on the model.
CES 2014 also saw the launch of new wearable technology devices including 'Smart socks' with inbuilt sensors that detect users each footfall. The $185 socks track how a user's foot hits the ground, the rhythm of each footfall and calculates the stride length and will be helpful in alerting people to possible injury. The smart socks will be launched in March this year by Heapsylon, the company behind the new ‘Sensoria’ range of products.

Narendra Modi launches 'India272+' Android app

Narendra Modi has launched an 'India272+' Android app to get the magic figure of 272 in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The app is aimed at 12 crore first time voters, who will be cast their votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections scheduled to take place in May 2014. According to Modi's website India272.com, the application is available on the Google Play Store and can be downloaded for free by Android users.
The app allows the general public to interact with Modi about issues raised in his speeches as well as allows party members and volunteers to interact with each other and share their ideas. They can also publish media files and photographs as well as share the discussions on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Vodafone's new platform lets users buy apps, content via operator billing

Vodafone's new platform lets users buy apps, content via operator billing
Vodafone has launched a new platform that allows app developers, including local and international, to build and sell apps through operator billing. Called the Vodafone Developer Platform, the new platform is supposed to help app developers, content service providers as well as end users.
For end users, the new platform provides access to a wider range of applications and content along with a convenience of operator billing. Vodafone points out the new platform will be highly useful, considering limited penetration of credit cards and lack of a convenient mechanism to make small transactions via the mobile.
The Vodafone Developer Platform opens up Vodafone network resources (known and API in technical parlance) like subscriber profile, billing, location, messaging etc. for the app developers and content providers to build their offerings.
Vodafone will also helping developers in testing apps and services. “A minimal, standard set of terms and conditions govern the commercial and others aspects of the developers relationship with Vodafone India, while providing them potential access and exposure to millions of quality customers,” says the operator in a release.
“With the growth of smartphones and mobile internet, people are increasingly showing more interest in mobile apps and content services. To strengthen the eco-system for app developers & content service providers and partner with them, we have launched the Vodafone Developer Platform. We expect the developer community to leverage this initiative of Vodafone to create locally relevant applications / content services and to monetize their ideas across Vodafone’s customer base. The Developer Platform will help in streamlining the partner on-boarding and transparent commercial settlements. This will also enable our customers use their Vodafone accounts to purchase any app or content offered by local as well international developers & content providers,” says Vivek Mathur, Chief Operating Officer, Vodafone India.
Vodafone's push to content and app developers comes amid high expectations from the 'app ecosystem' in the country. According to KeyPoint Technologies, a software company which works in text input technology, localization will play a key role in the app ecosystem, which will ultimately help push growth of smart devices in India this year.
“The industry understands that text input technology and the regional language content will be the next big thing for the app industry, and thus going forward, localization of applications and device UI will drive the user experience for the Indian smartphone OEMs. This foray into regional content development will allow app developers in penetrating markets beyond the metros and will help tapping the Class A and B cities/towns,” says KeyPoint Technologies in a release.
As far as the integrated operator billing goes, operators and OEMs have previously tried out this model. Back in 2011, Reliance Communications and Nokia tied up to offer integrated billing on Nokia Ovi Store. Nokia had similar partnerships with Vodafone and Airtel in 2012. However, Vodafone's new effort is unique as it focusses on encouraging developers as well.

Subway Surfers now comes to Mumbai

Subway surfers comes to Mumbai after adding cities like London, Sydney, New York and Rome. The endless runner game has been on a world tour for a while, and the new update brings it to its 12th world tour shop to Mumbai. The version 1.17.0 for Android shows users running around colourful streets of Mumbai.
The new update shows tracks lined with fruit stalls and has a lot more earthy colors. The train also has brown and cream colors similar to the ones found in Mumbai. The game has added a new collectible character called Jay which looks suspiciously like Milkha Singh as portrayed by Farhan Akhtar in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. It has the same number tag attached on the back of his shirt. Even the inspector in the game that chases the characters is now dressed up in khaki colours to go with the uniform worn by police officers in Mumbai city.

The game has seen more than 100 million downloads from the Google Play store and is currently ranked number 5 on the top free apps for Android. The game features Tricky, Jake and Fresh who are found painting in the subway by Grumpy Inspector and his Pitbull dog and have to escape him. The games features a paint powered jetpack, hoverboard surfing, and has a multi-player mode.
Subway Surfers was launched for Windows Phone 8 in December, however the Mumbai update is available just for Android and iOS users. The game is currently available only for 1 GB of RAM devices, while 512 MB RAM support is expected soon.

Top free PC Security Tools

Top free PC Security Tools
In today’s day and age, technology for most of us has become an indispensable or an inevitable part of our lives. The entire need to connect and communicate with others makes us humans an information hungry species and rightly so. We’re forever in search of more and more information, amassing all that we can. The internet has been the like a guiding light or a major source for any and every kind of information that we need. While being extremely rewarding, the internet presents a lot of risks and threats along the way. The threats as most of us know range between the usual viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware, keyloggers and many other more complex ones. This is why it’s imperative to use some security software tools to secure our digital lives. We’ve made a list of some security tools below that we think are the best for what they do and so are a must try.

Avast Free Antivirus 2014:
A lot has been said about Avast within these very pages over the years and here we are at it again. This antivirus, this amazingly dependable antivirus suite is still the best free antivirus software out there. The reason we say this is because whenever we did an antivirus comparison test, Avast came out on top in one way or another. The antivirus has a very good detection rate and a ton of great features that are incorporated very well.

Everything, right from the user interface to the scanning process is designed in such a way that it’s very easy to navigate and even the biggest technologically challenged person can use it. The main highlights of the updated version include a better cloud-based file reputation service along with options for automatic sandboxing of suspicious programs and remote assistance capabilities.

Avast boasts of finely tuned real time shields like the file system shield, the web shield and the mail shield, each of which provide the user with status and configuration options. With a completely redesigned and streamlined interface in the 2014 edition, and millions of active users around the world. Avast is the best way to go and you won’t have to look any further for a better free antivirus software suite. What more can anyone ask for when you receive these many features absolutely free.

Comodo Firewall:
A firewall is from amongst the most important type of network based security system or service. It controls the incoming and outgoing network traffic by analyzing data packets based on a pre-determined rule set.

Though the built-in firewall in windows works absolutely fine, there is still room for improvement. This is where Comodo comes in. Comodo is a free, multilayered firewall software that also works as an antivirus for protecting your system from viruses, trojans, worms and other threats. Comodo Firewall is made to be very unobtrusive and thus it’s easy to use and configure. Download it and give it a whirl.

Tor:
Tor is a free software tool that is used to enable online anonymity. Basically, the Tor software prevents somebody from watching over your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, it prevents the sites you visit from knowing your physical location, and it also lets you access sites which are blocked.

Popularly known as the “anonymity network”, Tor directs the internet traffic through a volunteer network consisting of thousands of relays that help in hiding the user’s location from anyone doing traffic analysis. Using the Tor browser bundle makes it difficult for anyone to trace your activity on the internet through the path of online communication modes. Tor is associated with a very famous security term called “onion routing” which effectively refers to the use of multiple nested layers of encryption in order to maintain anonymity.

Many security focused operating systems like - Liberté Linux, Qubes and Tails use Tor. The bittorrent client Vuze for example supports Tor extensively. As a whole, the Tor browser bundle is the face of Tor and it includes a modified version of Mozilla Firefox ESR browser. One of the other useful features of Tor is the ability to run it from removable media. Download Tor from here: dgit.in/TorBr

KeePass:
It’s well known that if you want your digital information to be safe online, you should use a different password for every service that you’ve subscribed to. But when you actually have many different passwords, for different accounts, it becomes very tedious to remember all of the passwords. KeePass provides an elegant solution. KeePass lets you store encrypted copies of all your passwords and all you need to do is to remember one master password for all of them.

KeePass comes with its own random password generator which means that you’re not required to think and come up with random passwords on your own. Another very interesting security feature of KeePass has to be its AutoType feature that helps protect against keylogging. This feature automatically pastes the password required in the browser window by taking help of virtual keystrokes and the clipboard.

Spybot - Search and Destroy:
The most common type of security threat that we see online these days are spyware, malware and adware. As the name suggests, Spybot - Search and Destroy is a free anti-spyware utility that helps you keep adware and spyware at bay.

Spybot is like a veteran software in which we trust since the old days. Feature wise, Spybot can be easily integrated with the windows security center for a quicker access or to streamline and keep all the security related apps together. Spybot - Search and Destroy uses a very simple layout but it does the job pretty well. Download and install the software to experience it in all its unadulterated glory.

Tails:
Yes, you read it right. This unusually named tool is actually a live operating system which also follows along the lines of the concept of anonymity. Tails is an acronym for “The Amnesic Incognito Live System”. Using Tails, you can voyage the sea called internet anonymously while maintaining your privacy and circumventing censorship. The whole idea of using Tails is to browse like a boss and use any computer without leaving even a trace of usage on it.

Tails also features built-in encrypted email and chat with private messaging. The OS supports built-in file encryption as well. Using this file encryption feature, you can save your documents to a pen drive and they’ll automatically be encrypted. It doesn’t end here as this secure OS is preloaded with software like GIMP, OpenOffice, Audacity and more for editing purposes. Tails uses the Tor browser by default making it that much more better when it comes to maintaining your anonymity online.
So, these were some of the best free security tools that you should install and use in your computer, cause you never know when there might be an attack.

Best apps to change your boring old Android interface

Google’s Android mobile operating system has become the leader in the smartphone market and almost every manufacturer puts a UI layer on top just to make it more personalised. With endless number of ROMs and apps available online, one can easily change the way their device looks, without having to depend on a manufacturer.
While fiddling with the ROM can be a difficult as well as a risky task, we have listed out five apps that one can easily install onto his/her Android device to completely overhaul the look of the interface.
1. Aviate
Google Play Store page
A relatively new app, Aviate is primarily a launcher which replaces your default Android launcher app. Instead of the usual pattern of home screens, notification bars and drawers, Aviate has a completely different approach. The main screen, or the home, is a combination of your common apps and some widgets. It constantly keeps changing according to your usage as well as your location. So suppose you are travelling, Aviate will suggest you music and navigation apps or even Foursquare so that you can check-in. The launcher keeps learning as you use more of it which is actually interesting. However, there are minor bugs that still need to be ironed out by the developers, although you won’t find any issues such as crashes or lags.

Aviate is still in beta phase and is currently available on the Google Play store on invite only. But if you are lucky you can get your hands on the app via free invites available on various tech portals and one can even grab the installation file and sideload the app on their device.
2. Themer
Another cool looking launcher is Themer developed by MyColorScreen which replaces your default Android homescreen with customizable ones. This is one of the best apps if you wish to transform the way your Android smartphone looks and currently there are about 52,000 different looking homscreens for Themer that are available to download (depending on your device's specifications). All the themes have different layouts and design so at times it does get difficult getting used to them as you need to configure them constantly, but once you are through, you get a gorgeous looking UI.
Themer works on all Android 4.1 smartphones but tablet users will have to wait as it is not supported on large screened devices. The app is currently in beta testing but one can download the app from here and use this app by registering at the Themer app Web site for an activation code.

3. MIUI MiHome launcher
Developed by Xiaomi, a Chinese smartphone and app maker, the MiHome launcher app brings the MIUI interface to Android devices 2.3 and up. If you are not aware, MIUI is a customized Android interface that is seen on almost all of smartphones produced by Xiaomi. The MIUI MiHome launcher is one of the more easy to use apps as it primarily changes the looks of your Android interface rather than completely replacing the design pattern. It has its own lockscreen, icons, wallpapers as well as widgets. One can further customize them through the vast variety of customizable themes available from Xiaomi’s store.
4. Cover
We did mention Cover a few days ago and we think it is well made lock screen app if you use an Android smartphone. Just like Aviate, the app learns according to your usage and keeps changing itself according to your location and the time of day. Your most used apps are placed on a clean looking lock screen and you can easily open these apps with just a swipe.

Cover is currently available on the Google Play store for a few regions, so in case you cannot download it, grab the installation file from here to install it on your Android device.
5.    GO Launcher EX
The most downloaded and the most popular Android customizing app is Go Launcher EX. With tons of customizable themes available, it is perhaps the most widely used Android launcher app available. You can customize your icons, wallpapers and lock-screen via the numerous themes. The app is again a launcher based app which means you can switch between your default Android launcher easily.

5 essential apps for rooted Android devices

If you are an Android user, then you might have heard about rooting your device. In simple terms it is a process that allows a user to gain privilege control of the Android subsystem. A rooted device enables the user to perform functions that are not available to a normal Android user like running special apps that require administrator permissions, alter system applications and settings, or even remove and replace the OS to the most recent version.
Rooting a device is not that tough and there are a number of sources on the web that will help you perform the procedure. However, rooting a device means that you could lose the warranty of your device and could even end up with a bricked device, so be very careful.
Right, so you managed to root your Android device, what next? Well, you should definitely get these apps as soon as you are done with the procedure.

1.    Root Checker

As the name suggests, this app confirms whether your device was rooted properly or not. It even tells you some basic system information of your device. Once you run the app, it checks for system admin access. In case you do not have root access, it means that you need to go through the rooting process once again. Quite useful for people who are rooting their device for the first time.

Grab the app for free from the Google Play store.

2.    ClockworkMod (CWM)
This is very the terms get a little technical. Clockwork recovery is a very essential tool for all rooted devices as this app enables you to access your device’s recovery mode. Through the recovery mode you can install different customized ROMs, make an entire backup of your whole system as an image, install apps directly into the system, perform system related functions like formatting and partitioning your memory and a lot more. If you are rooting for the first time, do go through instructions and tips on using CWM because it isn’t that easy to use.

You need to install ROM manager to install CWM into your system. Download the app from here.

3.    Titanium backup pro

One of the best backup tools available for Android is Titanium backup pro. The app requires root access and lets you back-up all of your apps along with your data. It even lets you backup your system apps in case you plan to change your smartphone or just plan to change your ROM. One of the best features of Titanium is that you can uninstall any app from your device meaning that all the unnecessary bloat-ware apps that you don’t use can be removed from your device. Just a word of caution, do not remove any Android system related apps as you could end up damaging the operating system files.
Titanium backup pro is available from the Google Play store for Rs. 329

4.    Root Browser

This is your traditional file manager application which allows you to access all of your files and folders. You can move, copy or delete files, open or create zip files, sort your files to any order, share files with anyone, etc. Once you have rooted your device this app will let you access your system files and set read and write permissions of files and folders. Root browser is a very useful app as it makes the task for searching files and folders very easy.
The app is available for free from the Google Play store over here.

5.    STweaks

If you are looking for an app to mess around with your system then Stweaks is the answer. The app is a very powerful tool which directly allows you to reconfigure your Android kernel so use this app with extreme caution. You can perform various system functions like changing the clock speed of your processor, change the levels on your display, enable backlight notifications, boost your audio output, enable dual-booting, change the power consumption modes, and so on.
The only drawback of this app is that it is supported by limited number of kernels, so make sure you go through the list of supported kernels when you install the app.
Stweaks can be downloaded free of cost from the Google Play store.

What happens when art, innovation and technology meet?

Innovation plants its roots in the most unusual places. While there is something to be said about coming up with an out of the box idea, some of the best inventions come together while simply observing the box around you a little more closely. Simply seeing an everyday need and coming up with a way to fulfil it can be creatively beautiful. Every once in a while, you will see someone creating something, which when you look at, invokes the response “Now why didn’t I think of that?” The devices in this article are exactly that. Simplicity at its best. Design at its elegant best. Practical, efficient, stylish.

The Ecovacs Winbot 7:

This little gadget is the motorized floor cleaning tool for windows. The remote-controlled robot can clean glass of any thickness. It modifies its cleaning path depending on the size of the window. Ecovacs ensures its customers that the Winbot provides an intelligent, scratch free window cleaning experience. It’s silent enough for you to not even notice it’s there. That is, unless it detects a loss of suction, in which case it stops and blares alarms to catch your eye. It cleans in three stages: Moistening the dirt to loosen and absorb it, wiping the remnants off with the swab, and wiping the window dry after that. When it finishes its job, it returns to its original position and beeps shut until recalled. Admittedly, not much of a gadget for Indian homes, the Ecovac Winbot 7 could be huge with the big office complex glass towers that can’t find people to clean their windows (so they simply leave it gathering dust until the monsoons). In metros abroad, it may, admittedly, take away some window-washing jobs, but it undoubtedly provides a fatality-free solution for buildings like the Empire State. Designed to please, this little ‘bot is valued at $399 on Amazon.

The Beyond Standard Coffee Bench:

Technically not a technologically superior gadget, but a work of art nonetheless. Staying true to their name, Beyond Standard designed this bench giving a huge amount of thought to space optimization and style. It’s a rotating bench built to double as a table, the size of which can be adjusted to suit your function. It’s an artsy piece of furniture with a rustic look making it brilliant for both indoor and outdoor usage. The coffee bench can be made into varying lengths up to 3 meters and can be made out of various available materials.
Beyond Standards in itself is a Poland-based collaborative design and production studio led by Karolina Tylka who’s the product designer and Szymon Nawój – the interior architect. They dedicate themselves to research material, technology and space relations.

The Bradley

The Bradley may be a watch made for the visually challenged, but frankly, it’s one of the sleekest designed watches we’ve seen in the market today. The dial has two ball bearings on its dial. One on the face itself, and one on the edge of the dial. The former indicates the position of the minute hand and the latter, the hour of day. These are connected to the watch by magnets which rotate as time ticks on. If the ball bearings get misaligned, they can be sprung back to their correct place with a gentle shake of the wrist. The watch’s body is built entirely of Titanium, making it sturdy, durable and easy to clean and maintain. Initially funded by Kickstarter, this work of art is priced at a pretty hefty price of $175.

Bike-Powered Elevator for a Tree house:

This gadget almost didn’t make the cut. But innovation of this level can’t be left in the shadows. We tracked down Ethan Robb Schlussler (the guy who came up with this nifty little invention) and decided to talk to him about it. Schlusser lives in Sandpoint, Idaho, and is quite the nature freak. A photographer by profession, he’s into adventure sports and has a love of heights (which, we presume is what led to the creation of the bike-powered elevator, or even the tree house, to be honest). The elevator is built using an old bicycle. Working it is as simple as pedalling. The mechanism works with two cables that spool around the front and rear wheels respectively go over a pulley mechanism at the tree house. The other two cables go over and through the tree house and come together at the counterweight. When the cyclist reaches the tree house, the counterweight holds the cycle steady as you disembark. Simple, efficient and frankly, easy to put together as your own little DIY project. Quite ingenious.

Chuck, the warping bookshelf:

Ever wanted a bookshelf that expanded with every book you put in it? Every bibliophile’s daydream comes to life when they meet Chuck. Chuck is the most accommodating bookshelf you’d ever buy. He is made out of six 4mm-thick flexible wooden planks with two stainless steel locking collars at the ends. Each individual plank stretches out as it makes room for books and other contents you want to put in it. Funky, flexible, and extremely simple-looking, this piece of furniture will adapt according to its contents with seemingly no effort at all. A piece of modern art in itself, it’s easy to pack up and conserves space like no other bookshelf would. This bookshelf is priced at $799-$899 at http://shop.hafriko.com/

The TiGr:

So, you have a watchdog? Bid deal. I have a TiGr.
Stanton Concept’s ‘TiGr’ is a titanium lock system for a bicycle that’s more versatile, lightweight, minimal storage and secure than a typical U-Lock. It consists of two lightweight straps, a flexible bow and a compact and highly pick-resistant lock cylinder. This mechanism can be easily carried around on your cycle by strapping it to any part of the bicycle that’s comfortable for you, and when you need it, simply attach it to any fixed structure and pass it through both your wheels to lock your entire cycle into an immovable position. Simple, effective and as elegant as you want it to be. And considering it’s made of very sturdy titanium, it’s highly probable that it will outlast your bike and make its way a few generations down the line to your grandkid’s first bike.
