Google has rolled out a new update for Maps that allows users measure the distance between multiple points on the map. The feature was available earlier under the experimental Google Labs options, but has now been rolled out as a part of the main service.
To use this option, users can right-click on a starting point on the map and select “Measure distance,” and then choose a destination to see the distance between the two points. What's more, you can click anywhere on the map to add additional locations and measuring points to your trip.
Google has also added an option to drag an existing map point to measure the distance from a pre-selected location to another. The feature also allows travelers to twist and turn points to align them with streets on the map to get precise measurements. This new feature is ideal for runners, cyclists, motorists who want to create a real-world dot-to-dot that they can visit while traveling.
Google had rolled out a new version of Google Maps in February after working in pre-view mode for nearly a year. The new interface gives improved integration of search results, smart route navigation and easier access to picture galleries. New features like search results embedded right into the maps and navigation system with real-time traffic reports and previews of the destination using Street View graphics are also added. Google May update to its Maps brought back terrain view feature which shows the elevation of geographic features and is popular with trekkers.
