Jolla to enter Indian market, announces tie up with Snapdeal
Finnish smartphone company Jolla has announced plans to enter the Indian market. The company will be having an exclusive partnership with e-commerce website Snapdeal to launch the Jolla smartphone in India.
Jolla will be launching smartphones based on Sailfish OS that will also have Android application compatibility. One of the main highlights of the Sailfish OS is that it depends on gestures including swiping to access different pages and apps and ‘pulling’ to perform actions like making calls or taking photos.
Jolla has already launched a smartphone featuring 4.5-inch IPS qHD display, 5-point multi-touch with Gorilla 2 Glass, 8 megapixel AF camera with LED flash and 2MP front-facing camera, 16GB storage, 1GB RAM and microSD slot. Read more about the Jolla smartphone here.
So far, there's no information on the pricing and availability of the Jolla smartphone in India. "We will not be able to disclose the price right now," a Snapdeal spokesperson told Digit.
"At the beginning of the sales, Snapdeal and us will arrange a press conference in New Delhi, where we explain everything in more detail. The price point will be announced at that event. The timing for this is within a month," says Jolla in an e-mail to Digit.
Sami Pienimäki, Co-founder and CMO of Jolla comments: “Since late 2011 when we established the company Jolla, we have received a tremendous amount of interest from India to enter this great market. In particular we have found it very encouraging how much there is interest and trust for mobile heritage coming from Finland, and what kind of development opportunities there are to start to develop e.g. local applications for India.”
Kunal Bahl, Co-founder & CEO, Snapdeal.com comments on this exclusive partnership: “Jolla with its innovative Sailfish OS introduces an entirely new user experience to consumers. Jolla offers a unique smartphone experience both in terms of hardware and software. We look forward to a long term and mutually beneficial relationship”.
Jolla's entry in India comes shortly after Google announced launching affordable Android One-based handsets in India. It's worth pointing out here Firefox has also tied up with Indian smartphone makers such as Intex to launch Firefox OS-based affordable smartphones. According to reports, Samsung will be soon releasing its Tizen-based smartphones in India.
Another interesting development is Jolla taking the online route to enter the Indian market – a new trend that has picked up after Flipkart-Motorola partnerships for Moto smartphones. Chinese company Xiaomi, which just announced its first devices for the Indian market, has an exclusive tie up with Flipkart.
