After modular smartphones, Google X now working on modular displays

The top secret research arm of Google is at it again. According to recent reports, Google X is working on a completely new form of display technology. This includes displays that come in different shapes and sizes and fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle to form one large display. The report was first published by The Wall Street Journal.

Further, the smaller modular displays, when connected to each other, will have the ability to function as a single large display. The project is reportedly being headed by Mary Lou Jepsen, professor at MIT, head of display research at Google X and founder of Pixel Qi, a firm that is involved in research on low power display technology for mobile devices.

The Wall Street Journal cited a source as saying that the real challenge in the project was to stitch the screens together electronically and by using software.

Of course, this is not the only modular project that Google is working on. Project Ara is now pretty well know and Google has already showcased prototypes of its modular smartphones developed under this project. The tech giant is expected to bring the first consumer models of Project Ara in January next year.

Google X is responsible for some of the company’s most ambitious projects, which are known within Google as 'moonshots'. The facility has also tried its hand at things like teleportation etc.
