BlackBerry plans more 'unconventional' devices and be disruptive in its strategy

After having launched the square-screen smartphone Passport, BlackBerry is planning to launch more unconventional devices in the near future. In an interview with Reuters, Ron Louks, president of the company's Devices division, revealed now that the company had pared losses, it 'could afford to take some risks to launch one unconventional devices each year'.

"When it comes to design and being a little bit disruptive, we want that 'wow' factor," Louks is quoted as saying. "Not all of the products will have it, but we definitely have opportunities."

According to Louks, the company is already working on an unconventional device, which has received positive feedback from carriers on it. Without revealing much, the BlackBerry official further said the new device would be easier to use with single hand. "From a roadmap perspective, I'm pretty happy with where we are at for next year," he added.

BlackBerry has just launched Passport, which is also being dubbed as one of the most uniquely designed smartphones of late. The device has received mixed reviews. While some have praised the unique display and battery life, many have criticized the device for being difficult to operate with one hand.

According to BlackBerry's chief exec John Chen, BlackBerry will be showcasing new devices at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in 2015. "Given the receptivity for the Passport, I know that we'll have at least another generation of that device," said Chen. "I also carry very high hopes for the Classic, and I've spoken with a lot of people that want it ... so I think we will have another iteration on that, and there will be a new concept device too."
