Google has been hinting at a merger between the two OS-es since it appointed Sundar Pichai in charge of both teams following Andy Rubin's departure in 2013. According to Wall Street Journal now Hiroshi Lockheimer will manage both the operating systems though he will still report to Sundar Pichai. Sources reveal that Lockheimer will only be in charge of the Chrome OS engineering team, but not the Chrome browser, Chromebook or Chromecast teams.
Google revealed that Android apps would work natively in the Chrome OS environment at the Google I/O developer conference earlier this year. Last month, a handful of Android apps became available in the Chrome OS store. According to sources, now with Lockheimer reportedly in charge of both engineering staffs, more integration between Chrome and Android OS will be seen.
According to a recent IDC report, Android is used on more than 80 percent of mobile devices including smartphones and tablets. Google is now branching out its Android OS beyond smartphones and tablets, with its latest version “Lollipop”. The Android 5.0 OS will also power in-dash car computers, televisions and wearable devices like smartwatches. Merging the two operating systems would simplify work for software makers, who have to create different versions of their apps for the two different platforms.
